US warns Turkey over military action in Kurdish enclave

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><img src="http://18694-presscdn.pagely.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Turkish-ground-offensive-in-Kurdish-enclave.jpg" /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to continue military action to rid Syria of US-allied Kurdish militias, despite a warning from Washington for Turkey not to risk a clash with its forces in the region.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Turkish operations continued Wednesday against Kurdish militants in Afrin, a Kurdish-held enclave in north-western Syria.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">But, in a telephone call with Erdogan, US President Donald Trump urged the Turkish leader to “avoid any actions that might risk conflict between Turkish and American forces” and emphasized the “shared goal” of the lasting defeat of the Islamic State terrorist movement, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Trump “relayed concerns” that the escalating violence in Afrin “risks undercutting our shared goals in Syria,” Sanders added.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Operation “Olive Branch” in Afrin, a Kurdish-held area close to the Turkish border, was launched on Saturday. Erdogan said the plan is to now extend the mission to Manbij, a city captured from the Islamic State movement in 2016 by Kurdish-led forces, backed by the US.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A Kurdish official told dpa that US soldiers remain inside Manbij. Analysts have cautioned that the area could be a flashpoint in already strained relations between Washington and Ankara.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“Starting with Manbij, we will destroy this game along our borders and completely cleanse our region of this mischief,” Erdogan said, vowing to “exterminate the terrorists.”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Erdogan said 268 “terrorists” in Afrin have been neutralized – a term Ankara uses to refer to their removal from the battlefield, usually through death.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The main Kurdish militia in the area, the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), has not verified the casualties and reported only several of its fighters killed.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Erdogan said the Turkish Army and allied Syrian rebels had lost seven or eight fighters in the ongoing offensive. The operation is aimed at enabling 3.5 million refugees in Turkey to return to Syria, he said.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Human rights observers claim that there have been more than a dozen civilian casualties. Turkey denies hitting any civilians.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in its latest death toll report that some 125 people were killed over the last five days in the Afrin region, among them Turkish-backed Syrian rebels.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The group said that 28 civilians, including eight children, were among those killed. Kurdish officials placed the civilian death toll higher.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Late Wednesday, in the Turkish border town Kilis, a Turkish civilian and a Syrian were killed by rocket fire that originated in Syria, local broadcasters reported. Earlier this week, a Syrian refugee was killed by a similar strike.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Shervan Derwish, a spokesman for the Manbij Military Council, said his forces are on “full alert” in case Turkey moves on the city, where US-led coalition forces are still present.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“We are in constant contact with coalition forces, who are conducting patrols on the front lines and aerial patrols – their troops are still in Manbij,” Derwish told dpa by phone.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">He accused Turkey of waging an offensive aimed “against the Kurdish people.”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Manbij is located to the east of Afrin. In between the two cities lies a Turkish-controlled zone.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The US has supplied weapons to the Syrian Democratic Forces to battle Islamic State forces, angering Turkey, which sees the YPG as more of a threat due to its links to Turkey’s Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a designated terrorist group.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">US officials have yet to offer clarity on their stance on the Turkish operation on Afrin, other than expressing concern it could lead to volatility and risks complicating the battle against Islamic State, while also supporting Ankara’s right to security.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In their Wednesday call, Erdogan and Trump also welcomed the return of more than 100,000 refugees to Syria after the defeat of Islamic State forces. They also “discussed the need to stabilize a unified Syria that poses no threats to its neighbours, including Turkey,” the White House said.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">On Thursday, Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl plans to meet in Istanbul with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, seeking a return to “positive dialogue” and restoration of normal relations after recent tensions between Vienna and Ankara.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The new Austrian government’s coalition agreement cements opposition to European Union membership talks with Turkey.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In December 2012, a fatal gang-rape of a medical student in New Delhi brought spotlight on crimes against women in India.</span></div>

In Israel, Pence hastens US embassy move

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><img src="http://18694-presscdn.pagely.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/mike-pence-benjamin-netanyahu_4211742.jpg" /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In a speech before the Israeli parliament, US Vice President Mike Pence said that the US embassy will move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by the end of 2019 and called on the Palestinians to join direct peace talks with Israel.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The vice president’s timeline drastically cuts previous White House estimates of three to four years for the controversial embassy move.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“In the weeks ahead, our administration will advance its plan to open the US Embassy in Jerusalem – and the embassy will open before the end of next year,” Pence said.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Pence is the first senior US official to visit the contested city since President Donald Trump sparked Palestinian protests and international condemnation by declaring it Israel’s capital and announcing the embassy move.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">His speech – full of biblical imagery and met with rousing applause from Israeli lawmakers – was slammed by top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat as “messianic.”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Holding posters saying “Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine,” Israeli Arab lawmakers stood up during the start of Pence’s speech in protest and were then shoved out of the Knesset chamber by ushers amid shouts.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Pence’s two-day visit comes at a low-point in Washington’s relationship with the Palestinians.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Palestinian officials are boycotting Pence’s visit and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has insisted that the US is now disqualified from its decades-long role as the main mediator between Israelis and Palestinians.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Pence called on the Palestinians to “return to the table,” and said the US supports a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict “if the parties agree.”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“Peace can only come through dialogue,” Pence said.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Trump’s December 6 Jerusalem declaration, which included a promise to move the US embassy, upended decades of US policy towards the divided holy city.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Palestinians saw the move as endorsing Israeli control of East Jerusalem, which they claim as the capital of a future Palestinian state.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Erekat, in a tweet, said the speech proved “that the US Administration is part of the problem rather than the solution.”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Israelis meanwhile welcomed Pence, declaring Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as historic.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Netanyahu addressed Pence in English as “my good friend Mike” and said that “no other American vice president has had a greater commitment to Israel and its people.”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Netanyahu said Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is among the most important moments in Zionist history.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, Israel captured the eastern half of Jerusalem, now home to over 300,000 Palestinians, and later annexed the territory in a move that was not internationally recognized.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Deepening Palestinian resentment, Washington announced last week that it is withholding 65 million dollars from the UN refugee agency responsible for Palestinians.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Ayman Odeh, the leader of the main Israeli Arab party, called Pence on Twitter “a dangerous racist whose presence here is only to harm any possibility of peace.”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Later on Monday, Pence and his wife Karen will have dinner with Netanyahu and his wife Sara at the prime minister’s residence.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">On Tuesday, Pence will visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and the Western Wall, the holiest site for Jewish prayer. Israeli officials will not accompany the vice president to the holy site, which is located in territory claimed by Palestinians.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Pence’s Israel visit is the last leg of a regional tour that included stops in Jordan and Egypt.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Many casualties are expected in the latest attack by terrorists at a highbrow hotel in Kabul. At least four gunmen stormed the iconicIntercontinental Hotel in a night-time raid on Saturday and opened fire on guests and staff.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">According to AFP, the hours-long assault  is still ongoing by midnight GMT.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the latest attack in the Afghan capital that followed a series of security warnings in recent days to avoid hotels and other locations frequented by foreigners.</span></div>

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“Four attackers are inside the building,” an official at the National Directorate of Security (NDS) spy agency told AFP.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A guest hiding in a room told AFP he could hear gunfire inside the 1960s hilltop hotel where dozens of people attending an information technology conference on Sunday were staying.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“I don’t know if the attackers are inside the hotel but I can hear gunfire from somewhere near the first floor,” the man, who did not want to be named, said by telephone.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Another official said the attackers were armed with small weapons and rocket-propelled grenades when they blasted their way into the hotel, which often hosts weddings, conferences and political gatherings.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The United Nations has expressed worries over swelling numbers of people, fleeing from English-speaking areas of Cameroon to Nigeria.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The UN fear for the safety of those fleeing, particularly women and children.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Mr. William Spindler, spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), decried the precarious situation of women and children.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">He said that women and children made up about 80 per cent of the approximately 10,000 registered refugees in Nigeria’s Cross River.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“Some of these are boys and girls who fled to Nigeria alone,” Spindler said, adding that unaccompanied and separated children are particularly vulnerable.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“UNHCR has received numerous reports that children have to work or beg to survive or to help their families.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“Many reported that they were unable to attend school, for lack of time and money.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“Thousands more are among the population of unregistered Cameroonians in neighbouring states, where some of the children are unaccompanied and vulnerable.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“UNHCR is working with the Nigerian authorities to assist with the reunification of separated children with their families, to provide unaccompanied children with protection services and to restore the basic right of all children to education,” Spindler said.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">He said some of the children fleeing to Nigeria told UNHCR that they had been out of school in Cameroon for all of 2017.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“For women, the lack of work combined with the over-stretched reception facilities, creates a higher risk of sexual and gender-based violence, particularly from survival sex.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“While only a limited number of cases have been recorded, mainly in the Amana community of Cross River state, UNHCR is concerned that many more go unreported or are referred only to community elders.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“Incidents of domestic violence, as well as cases of teenage pregnancies involving girls as young as 14, have also been reported,” the spokesperson elaborated.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">He said in Benue, two school buildings were serving as temporary refugee accommodations, where women and their families sleep inside communal school halls – deprived of private space and the right to family dignity.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“For them, and for the rest of the population living in temporary tents hastily built next to local residences, sufficient and appropriate shelter is key to ensure adequate registration, systematic aid distribution and reduced protection risks,” Spindler stressed.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">According to him, UNHCR and the Nigerian authorities are currently working to identify sites away from the border, where the refugees can live according to international standards.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“We are also establishing offices in the towns of Calabar and Adikpo to better provide assistance and protection to the women and children,” he said, noting that support includes food, basic relief items, water and sanitation facilities.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Since mid-2017, Cameroon’s Anglophone regions have seen demonstrations as tensions have mounted over what the country’s English-speakers see as discrimination against them in favour of the majority French-speaking population.</span></div>

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The rural community of Mthayisi village in South Africa is currently left in shock after a dead mother-of-five gave birth to a lifeless child on the eve of her funeral.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Times Live reported that Nomveliso Nomasonto Mdoyi, 33, was found with a stillborn infant between her legs by funeral parlor staff 10 days after she lost her breath and died, </span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The discovery was reportedly made by a staff as Mdoyi’s body was being transferred to a coffin at the Lindokuhle Funeral Parlour.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“When we took the body from the mortuary tray to her coffin we discovered that there was a newly born baby between her legs,” Lindokuhle Funeral owner Fundile Makalana told Dispatch Live.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">He also added saying "We were so shocked and frightened that we did not even have time to look at the sex of the baby.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">"I have been in the business for more than 20 years and I have never heard of a dead woman giving birth."</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The stunned community members suspected witchcraft and even suggested they burn the dead woman and her child. But it was learned that doctors insist that it’s possible the child was born naturally to Mdoyi who was nine months pregnant at the time of her death.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Mdoyi’s mother, Mandzala Mdoyi, 76, who also was shocked by the discovery told Times Live: “First, I was devastated by the untimely death of my daughter and now I got the shock of my life to learn that she has given birth while she had been dead for 10 days. What is that? God please come and intervene.”</span></div>

U.S. Govt. Shutdown is an anniversary gift from the democrats party – Trump

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><img alt="U.S. President Donald Trump" src="http://18694-presscdn.pagely.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/IMG_5784.jpg" /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">U.S. President Donald Trump said in a string of early Saturday tweets that the Federal Government shutdown was a “gift” from Democrats to mark his first anniversary in the office.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Trump also laid the entire blame of the stalemate at the doorstep of Democrats whom he accused of obstructing measures to keep the government running and pushed for more Republicans to be elected into congress in 2018.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The 45th president of the U.S. was inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2017, after defeating arch-rival Democratic Hillary Clinton by Electoral College in the Nov. 8, 2016 poll, but lost the popular votes to her.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Trump said: “Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. #WeNeedMoreRepublicansIn18 in order to power through mess!”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“This is the One Year Anniversary of my Presidency and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present. #DemocratShutdown</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“For those asking, the Republicans only have 51 votes in the Senate, and they need 60. That is why we need to win more Republicans in 2018 Election!</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“We can then be even tougher on Crime (and Border), and even better to our Military Veterans!” he wrote at 6:44 a.m., followed by the catchphrase “#AMERICA FIRST!”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The shutdown followed the inability by Republican and Democrats senators to reach a compromise on the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme that gave protection to about 800,000 undocumented children and building a wall along the U.S.- Mexican border.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In the situation, Federal Government employees would be forced to shut down nonessential services while essential staff at top level agencies would continue working but employees are not sure when they would get their salaries.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A government shutdown could last for days or weeks as long as it takes Congressional leaders from both parties to reach an agreement to fund the government, but not months.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A temporary spending bill was passed in the House of Representatives on Thursday night with 230 to 197, but a concurrent 60 votes was required in the Senate to advance a short-term spending bill to fund the government and avoid a shutdown.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">However, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said: “The overwhelming number in our caucus have said they don’t like this deal and they believe if we kick the can down the road this time we’ll be back where we started from next time. So there’s very, very strong support not to go along with their deal.”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Consequently, the final vote in the Senate as at midnight ended 50 to 49, for and against respectively, short of the required 60 votes in order to break a filibuster, while Sen. John McCain was absent.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also laid the shutdown at the Democrats’ feet, blasting Democrats from the Senate floor where he said the shutdown “was 100 per cent avoidable”.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">McConnell asked: “What has their filibuster accomplished? What does it accomplish? The answer is simple. Their own government shutdown. I don’t think it makes the institution looks very responsible. The American people should expect better from us.”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Vice President Mike Pence in a statement also criticised the Democrats, saying: “Our administration worked in good faith to put a bipartisan deal on the table that would strengthen our borders, end chain migration, eliminate the visa lottery, and deal compassionately with DACA.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #212121; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 30px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“But rather than solve problems, Democratic leadership preferred a shutdown that has dangerous consequences for our national defense. Their action tonight- or lack thereof- is unconscionable”.</span></div>
